History of the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Programme
The Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Programme is an undergraduate programme under the Faculty of Language, Arts, and Education (FLAE), Universitas PGRI Semarang, which plays an important role in producing professional educators, researchers, and practitioners in the fields of Indonesian language, literature, and education. The programme was established as part of the university’s commitment to developing graduates who possess pedagogical competence, linguistic expertise, literary appreciation, strong character values, and the ability to respond to developments in education, culture, and technology.
The Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Programme at Universitas PGRI Semarang was officially established on 19 July 1989 and has continued to develop in line with the increasing need for qualified Indonesian language and literature educators. On 17 April 2014, the study programme experienced institutional development following the transformation of the institution into Universitas PGRI Semarang. Since its establishment, the programme has consistently contributed to strengthening Indonesian language and literature education through innovative learning, cultural preservation, and academic development.
Throughout its development, the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Programme has continuously enhanced the quality of education through curriculum improvement, innovative teaching approaches, research activities, community engagement, and the expansion of academic and professional collaborations. Its commitment to educational quality was demonstrated by achieving B Accreditation from the National Accreditation Board for Higher Education (BAN-PT) based on Decree Number 006/BAN-PT/Ak-IV/V/2000 dated 29 May 2000. As part of its continuous quality improvement efforts, the programme successfully achieved the highest accreditation rating, “Excellent” (Unggul) from the Independent Accreditation Agency for Education (LAMDIK) based on Decree Number 123/SK/LAMDIK/Ak/S/II/2024. This accreditation is valid for five years, from 19 February 2024 to 18 February 2029.
The Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Programme focuses on the development of knowledge and expertise in the fields of Character and Values Education, Linguistics and Language Studies, Literary Studies and Criticism, Language and Literature Pedagogy, Entrepreneurship in Language, Literature and Education, as well as Language Proficiency Skills. Through a curriculum designed to be completed within 4 years (8 semesters) with a total study load of 144 credits (216 ECTS), the programme is committed to producing graduates with professional competencies in Indonesian language teaching, linguistic and literary research, educational innovation, cultural literacy, and the application of language skills in various professional contexts.
The Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Programme continues to be committed to improving the quality of education through strengthening learning processes, developing research excellence, implementing community engagement programmes, and expanding collaborations at both national and international levels. Supported by professional academic staff, an adaptive curriculum, and an innovative academic environment, the programme strives to produce excellent graduates with strong character, cultural awareness, creativity, and professional competence who are able to contribute meaningfully to the advancement of Indonesian language, literature, education, and society.
